Alpujarras

Alpujarras

There were seventeen fellow walkers with two leaders (Alf & Julian) based at Capileira. I thoroughly enjoyed ALL The walks I did, these being the C / D+ level.

The village we stayed in had everything – shops, restaurants, a market and character. Oh – and numerous water fountains…! A number of similar villages were within walking distance or with local transport available if necessary.

The hotel was ideal. It had a typical Spanish bar complete with hanging hams drying in mountain air and local people. I was very impressed with the hotel’s garden, which we used to relax in after the walks and hold any daily updates. The hotel also had its own swimming
pool – very refreshing although it was a little chilly! But then I like my water luke-warm, others had no problem… Both areas had lots of sun and enabled the group to bond!
No wonder the Leaders like the area! Any vacancies?

The walking was obviously “up & down” being in the mountains. I preferred the walking “from & to” the village, although it is necessary at times to transit by private bus, allowing us to see more of the area around our base. Unfortunately the roads are very twisty…

I thoroughly enjoyed the high climbs in the mountains with the greatest height being reached on the official rest day. Snow was in abundance above 2,400 metres and we had some exciting snow walking in and around the “Refugio Poqueira” at 2,500m. A lovely place for coffee or beer whilst enjoying the views – down hill all the way back!

The mountain trails consisted of a variety of good tracks, narrow weaving trails and down to mountain goat tracks. The flowers & fauna & wildlife made the walking even more interesting and YES a little easier!!

The main things which made this a holiday to remember –

1) The weather – hot at times but not too hot (May). Only 10 mins of rain…

2) The people – a variety of people all with similar wants – fun whilst walking & a place to relax thereafter.

3) A good variety of food & drink available both at the hotel but also in local restaurants.

4) Good interesting walking with some specific targets for everybody; the ability to select & vary the “level” of walk on a daily basis proved excellent.

Oh! Did I mention the Leaders?! Not bad for two blokes…!
