A Taste of South Africa

A Taste of South Africa

We spend several days in the winelands on Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, about 90 minutes outside Cape Town. The part of the tour that I enjoy the most, as do most of my ramblers, is a stop at Boschendal Wine Estate, the oldest wine estate in South Africa.

We have an energetic walk through the Pardekop Reserve above Franschoek, before winding down into the town itself. On our walk we get to see some breathtaking views over a watershed, and we gaze down over Theewaterskloof – a spectacular view.

But I save the best part of the day to last, as a well-deserved reward after a good few hours of walking. We make our final stop at Boschendal, where we can sip fine wines and relax in the warm afternoon sunshine. There is a particularly beautiful rose garden here, and this glorious setting is the ideal spot for late afternoon tea. There are delicious fresh berries and cherries, which we have with homemade ice-cream. The homemade lemonade is delicious too, and we couldn’t choose a better spot to end off our day.

Some of our group members always opt for a glass of wine with a homemade dessert, and while I go for cherries, berries and ice-cream myself, I hear it is superb.
