Discovering Nice

Twenty of us are meeting up in Nice to look at the Gardens of the Riviera – what could possibly go wrong? Well quite a lot as it turned out…. our train across France was cancelled by a strike so we had to jump in the car. Then eleven of our group were detained in the UK (or in one case, the USA) by the volcano. Fortunately our guide Anna and her husband had arrived early at our comfortable and well-placed hotel to do some research on the holiday.

So a select and very agreeable group had a lovely time, under the stern but kindly eye of our leader, looking at gardens and museums and walking around the Riviera.

The high points for us? The main one was Lawrence Johnson’s garden La Serre de La Madone; a dream villa set on a series of terraces. But also Renoir’s house and garden, the Matisse chapel at Vence and the Jardin Exotique in Eze.

This is a fairly recent addition to the brochure and is a holiday in progress in many ways with more to be learned about local restaurants and gardens in the area. It’s already good and will be even better.
