Rewarding walking in Northern Greece

Journalist Alexandra Topping loved her recent walking holiday in the wild Zagori region of Northern Greece. In a most evocative article for The Guardian, she describes it as “the perfect Greek holiday”. We agree – our tour to Epirus and the Pindhos Mountains is based in the same area, and is one of our most popular Greek destinations.

This three-centre trip opens up the dramatic scenery of remote Northern Greece, a region of rugged scenery and traditional architecture a world away from the traditional Greek experience. The landscape is just stunning, with the limestone, forested ravines, rushing rivers, traditional stone-built villages, ‘floating monasteries’ and graceful arched bridges.

Perhaps the highlight of the holiday is hiking the dramatic Vikos Gorge – one of the top five gorges in Greece and a rival to Crete’s Samaria Gorge. The walking may be sometimes challenging, but it’s certainly most rewarding.

Alexandra also remarked that Greece is not an obvious choice for a walking holiday. Sorry, Alexandra, but here we disagree – Ramblers Worldwide Holidays offers 20 different Greek walking holidays to this beautiful, varied destination!
