Samos

Samos

As a newcomer to Ramblers I wondered what we had let ourselves in for with our trip to Samos for the “Two Easters” at the beginning of April. We needn’t have worried of course. It was excellent. The walking was brilliant, the company great, the leader superb, the hotel very good and the island a delight. It was lovely to be there at Easter, watch the celebrations and eat the food!

Samos has year-round water which means it is green with plenty of trees and bushes and at this time of year there are flowers everywhere. This holiday has the Royal Hoticultural Society insignia and is ‘designed so you can appreciate the flowers in their natural environment’. That is so true. From cliff top to hillside to meadow to beach there were always carpets of flowers.

Even the ancient site of Ephesus, to which we did a day trip, had flowers taking attention away from the ruins.

My particular fascination is with the orchids.

I am no expert, just an admirer of their beauty and diversity and there were plenty of them to bring extra joy to each day.

But other flowers abounded and the memory will always stay with me of the interweaving varieties creating natural gardens wherever you looked. These few photos can’t do justice to a magic island.
