Journalist Steve Newman meets up with one of our holiday groups, who are currently walking along Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland.
"A typical Northumberland summer day with light showers and sunshine saw me pulling up outside the Battlesteads Inn at Wark Northumberland to meet up with our group who are walking along Hadrian’s wall.
Using the hotel as a base the group are bussed out to sections along the wall for walks that hold amazing scenery and fascinating history from the Romans to the time of the Border Wars.
I met with Leader Liam Newell who told me the mixed group of 18 people who are already gelling. The group will be spending four days here and then on to Carlisle to walk the western sections of the wall.
Amongst the walkers I found in the cosy comfort of the bar, some clutching a glass of traditional Northumberland ale, was acclaimed travel writer Gillian Thornton, who is writing a review of the holiday for Silver Travel Advisor, the travel website for the over 50s."together and enjoying the wonderful food this award winning hotel offers. This is a green hotel with all the food being grown and sourced locally. After an enjoyable days walking it is great to come back to.
“Battlesteads is excellent. Superb food, strong Eco policy and even an observatory.” She told me. The Northumberland skies are so clear with no light pollution so the stars are amazing. I can highly recommend the new chalet rooms with Jacuzzi baths - well worth the upgrade supplement! And the walks are great!”
