Exploring the Sorrento Peninsula – 27th Dec 2011 – 3rd January 2012

We arrived at 10.30 pm from Manchester, hours after the Ramblers Worldwide Holidays flight from London Gatwick, but Anna, our leader appeared in reception before we knew it, fully prepared with all the details of our holidays: what we were doing, where we were going, etc. All totally efficient and prepared, which continued throughout our holiday.

Cannot praise Anna enough, she’s brilliant!

Where to start with a holiday on the Amalfi coast? Hightlights? Each day had its own highlight, from our first day walking up Monte Faito after a zigzag bus journey from VicoEquense in bright sunshine, to ending up walking in snow to the tiny chapel on the top for the most magnificent views across the whole plain.

Amalfi,Capri and Pompeii on our sightseeing days were wonderful. Anna, in her usual understated way, had arranged the most knowledgeable guide for a two-hour tour of Pompeii. He brought the whole site to life. It was a marvelous day!

In Capri we visited as a group of five, Anna having gone to Naples with the rest of the group (they had visited Capri the week before) – however, she ensured that we saw the best of Capri with detailed map of where to go and what to see. You must visit the Villa San Michele at Anacapri, we were told. This we duly did, climbing about a million steps – thank you Anna! However, as usual, she was right. The views were stunning.

Our final two days were spent walking the local area, again in sunshine with blue skies and some of the best view I have ever seen. In particular, the view overlooking the Siren Islands, which Jason (of Argonauts fame) had to sail past, will stay with me for a long time.

On a personal note, my New Years Day swim in the sea off the beach at VicoEquense under the shadow of Vesuvius was memorable, made even more so by having to climb yet more steps back to the hotel. Steps are everywhere!

All in all, an extremely enjoyable holiday, that I cannot recommend highly enough.
