The Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands

On holiday with 17 hardy souls and our great leader Karen G.
A very pleasant holiday for 10 days and I really chilled out. 7 days were on the island of Lipari with excursions available to nearby islands. Lipari has lovely flowers, scenery and although very windy at times the weather was good.

Volcano Island. 27 April. Our special boat awaits. Just room for everyone. Only one choppy bit where we hit the tidal race (Karen smiles bravely) between Lipari and Volcano Island. All out onto the quay, We climb to the summit. A long climb but we take it slowly with rests every 200m of height gained.

The views are lovely and we have lunch sheltered from the wind.  Pictures are taken and the brave take the path through the sulphur spumes. I go the sensible route (always listen to Karen) – a wise decision.

Soon time to descend to find coffee and ice cream at the cafe. Next, a walk around the island where Jill decides to have a mud bath, a brave woman!

Our boat is due and moors. But, the Fat Controller (FC) has a rant (sounds good in Italian) and our boat swiftly moves away just in time for a big ferry to dock. Not sure but think the FC is having a go at us for standing on the quay. Soon we go back to Lipari with a following wind.

Thoughts. A relaxing holiday. The islands are lovely – the hotel in Lipari was excellent and locals very friendly. On our last day we visited Catania, enjoyed a group lunch and admired the skill of the drivers in the frantic traffic.
